Communion Meditation – September 2025
It is an interesting time in the growth of Christianity across the world where Christians are routinely accused of being judgmental, particularly towards whatever sin happens to be in vogue. Just by way of perspective, when Christianity first began it was considered a weak religion for offering so much mercy. Now Christians are condemned for judgment. The wrong take-away would be that since the early days, Christianity has lost its sense of mercy, but the right take-away is that the message of Christianity is always being misunderstood and attacked by a world that shape-shifts in new and perverse directions. The same message that was attacked yesterday for being merciful, and today for being judgmental, may be attacked tomorrow from yet a new bastion of darkness.
Let me make a statement that might sound outlandish or even provocative: Jesus is far more judgmental than you think. The most self-righteous Pharisee you will ever encounter at the most self-righteous, judgmental church that you will ever attend will fall far short of the judgment of Jesus. Jesus does not overlook sins. Not one sin has ever been unnoticed by His all-seeing eyes. Not one wicked thought or evil deed escapes the scrutiny of his infinitely righteous nature. Not a day, not an hour, not a minute goes by but Christ is grieved by the wickedness of planet earth. He is no fool. He is no pushover. He knows it all. But here the great mystery of the universe comes into play, because rather than a God who excuses sin or a God who exacts vengeance on sinners for their sin is a God who enters into our world and bears our sins.
Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls. – 1 peter 2:24-25
What is the cross, if not judgment? But the cross is not only justice, it is also love, because judgment is falling on the WRONG PERSON. You are the one judgment should have fallen on. Your sins ought to have brough the wrath of God down upon your own wicked head. But instead, your sin is judged and the punishment falls on Jesus…at the cross. The most judgmental Jesus you will ever encounter is at the same time the most loving Jesus you will ever encounter. It was on a cross that the sins of the world were judged, and it was on a cross that you were loved before the foundation of the world. So eat and remember that you are not innocent, but you are forgiven. Drink and remember that you are not sinless, but you have been washed, cleansed, and healed by the atonement of Christ. Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus, for you stand in Him complete and whole. Your sin has been judged, and you are free.
