Communion Meditation, August 3rd 2025
Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.
(Joh 6:53-58)
A friend recently took his daughter and granddaughters to the Ozark Empire Fair that ended yesterday. He was really excited because his three year old granddaughter had never tasted cotton candy before. She kept talking about “Cotton candy! Cotton candy!” But when they got to the Fair and he handed it to her, she wouldn’t it eat it…I don’t know what she had in her mind but it was not what she was expecting! He said, “I knew that if I could just get her to try it, she would like it!”
Well, of course she would…it’s pure sugar! Isn’t it funny how we try to get our kids to try foods we know they will love but in the end won’t be good for them? And yes, grandparents, I am speaking to you folks! But we want them to try it because we know they will enjoy it. On the other hand, getting our kids to like foods that are good for them but DON”T taste like bubble gum flavored sugar is a bit harder.
In our passage of Scripture today, Jesus calls his flesh “meat indeed”, and the word “indeed” means “of truth”, so He is saying that his flesh is True Food, or Real Food, and His blood is True Drink, or Real Drink. In other words, it is what we Truly, or Really need. The greatest need of our lives is not food or drink, because our physical needs are not the greatest needs that we have. The greatest need we have is a spiritual need. We need spiritual life. Notice how many times Jesus talks about life in this text:
Ye have no life
Hath eternal life
The Living Father
I live
He shall live
Live forever
This passage is all about the life we need, and the life we need can only come from the Living Father, who sent the Living Son to share their everlasting Life with us. How do we receive this life? By the broken body and shed blood of Jesus. Unfortunately, it is a lot easier to get hooked on the world’s sugary substitutes that on the True Food that God gives. No wonder Jesus said “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness.” So come hungry and taste of the Bread of Life. a
