Communion Meditation

Isa 48:22  There is no peace, saith the LORD, unto the wicked.

Joh 14:27  Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

One of the results of mankind’s fall into sin is the loss of peace. We are a people who don’t know peace. Conflict and unrest are baked into every strata of our lives. We are at war with one another at every level. Nations fight literal wars with tanks and missiles. Households are torn apart by selfish desires and ambitions. Co-workers strive against one another for dominance and glory. Husbands and wives bite and devour one another until their marriages are cankered. Parents and children struggle and strive against one another. And should someone forsake all earthly relationships, they would still live with their own internal conflicts and anxieties.  Even in a monastery, there is no peace.

In the world, there is tribulation, but in Christ, there is peace. Before His crucifixion Jesus promises peace to His followers, but not just any peace. “My” peace. His own peace. The peace of the baby resting in the manger while earthly powers plotted his demise was the same peace of the man Jesus, facing the wrath and murderous intentions of the envious priests and Pharisees who were plotting his death. Though He had grown in stature, His peace remained the same.

His peace is, in fact, unchangeable, because the Eternal Son is in fellowship with the Everlasting Father, and this is the transcendent reality of peace. This is the foundation of all true peace in us and among us. Excavate the layers of Jesus’ peace and you will not find a feeling, but an uninterrupted, glorious fellowship with His Father. The fellowship that Jesus has with His father, Jesus offers to us. But it comes by way of His cross. Before we can have fellowship, our sin must be taken away. Only when we are justified by Faith can we have peace with God.

From our fellowship with the Father flows the peace that passes understanding. Our trials cannot quench this peace. Our troubles cannot pierce this peace. This is the peace that Jesus gives. His peace. He bought peace by the blood of His cross, and now He offers it to you as a gift. So lay aside your sin, cast off your anxiety, put off your wrath and malice and receive His Peace today.
